Hello, this is Jennifer Leake welcoming you to "Join Consultants Gold."

As an independent professional with more than twenty years experience running my own consultancy, I know the challenges of going it alone. Over the years, I've seen countless new consultants go out of business. Many of them went under before the ink on their new letterhead was dry!

These men and women were not lacking in talent, in skills, in experience or motivation. Every one of them had been a respected executive with deep experience in their particular industry or a talented employee who decided to go out on their own. Why, then, did they fail at being an independent consultant?

They failed because they were, for the first time, totally independent.

As employees of companies and corporations, everything we need to do a great job is usually provided to us. If you need help to pull a project together, assistants are assigned to you. If you need office supplies, anything from computers to paper clips, a purchasing office takes care of it. Need to travel?  Someone else makes arrangements. Often your work was delegated to you by other others who planned strategy or managed marketing and sales.

Now you've left the shelter of a corporate job, and may be overwhelmed by all the hats you have to wear. Making purchase decisions about computers and software. Making travel arrangements. Marketing and selling your company and services. Making a business plan and building a strategy to make it happen. And of course, paying for it too.

The total independence of being an entrepreneur is something many people dream of. But that dream can turn into a nightmare if you haven't developed the "entrepreneur mindset" and the knowledge and skills necessary to run a business all on your own.

The more I saw start-up consultants struggle and fail, the more determined I became to do something about it. That determination grew into a plan for providing both new and established consultants with a framework for success.
