Fantastic acronym to remember the client engagement process! I'm still honing this myself and learning to tune into prospects needs (info gathering). Ironically, soon after discussing my value, one senior manager from a large multi-national, asked if I'd ever be interested in working for them. I told her I would and perhaps an opportunity to be a temporary team member to start would be of value to both of us, after she mentioned hiring many consultants and needing more. Love the process laid out with "DRIVE". Asking for the business is what I need to work on, along with ensuring I am speaking to a decision-maker who has the desire and money to work with me.

I am a TED freak as well. I have Nancy’s book Resonance and it is one of my favorites. A particularly good antidote to consultants’ desire to explain everything and not emote anything.

Staying focused can be tough. My 3 words: Focus, Chunking (of time), and Rewards. An educator by profession I know the value of positive reinforcement to shape our behavior. You want to avoid punishing yourself (we are often too hard on ourselves as it is) and use positive incentives – small and larger to reward productivity. I'm starting to use a timer for 60 or 90 min intervals of focused work. Often once I get started I don't want to stop and limit my breaks. It's just the starting that's tricky but staying on task until the timer goes off helps. Then I treat myself to a cup of tea.
I recommend scheduling time to check email or for social media. They can be real stealers. Ishut off the new email message flash and sound to avoid being tempted to check or being distracted.

HI Jennifer, I love the 3 words concept. It allows me to be much more deliberate in my actions and intentions for the upcoming year. I too struggle with the shiny bright objects and other distractions throughout my day and my life. So, my words are Focus, Structure (as it relates to time and stuff), and Creativity. Your comments so often hit home with me and remind me and help me focus on what I believe to be the important things.

I had a difficult year last year – a business partnership that didn't work out and a fire destroyed my condo. I'm rebuilding and developing a new consultancy. My goals for 2012: To obtain speaking and consulting contracts to break even by creating/submitting proposals and contacting my network with opportunities to add value to their organizations though my services. Initial goal: R & D to prepare seminar materials on critical topics for workplace learning and performance improvement, so I can begin marketing them to potential clients.
